The perfect cleaning for silver
If silver turns black over time, this is a sign that it is reacting with oxygen and hydrogen sulphide from the air. Even traces of hydrogen sulphide, which is also found in many foods, are enough to cause this. Eating eggs with a silver spoon, for example, is therefore not a good idea. Nevertheless, many silver cutlery items can nowadays be washed in the dishwasher. However, the pieces should be cleaned with clear water before being placed in the dishwasher. If the cutlery comes into contact with acidic or salty foods, such as mustard or salad dressings, it can be cleaned and rubbed with a soft cloth to prevent the precious metal from being attacked. Finally, especially in the case of carcasses, commercially available silver care products, such as silver polish or silver cleaning cloths, also help to preserve the silver pieces. Specially impregnated cutlery bags, cases or boxes are suitable for storage to protect the precious metal from black spots and flash rust, otherwise silverware pieces can also be sealed in aluminum foil if they are to be stored for a longer period of time.
