Glugglejug: Colorful carafes in cult fish design

In 1870, the first water jug in the shape of a fish was produced by the British manufacturer Thomas Forester & Sons. Back then, however, no one could have imagined that this jug would be the birth of a true cult object. It was not until some 88 years later that the design gained popularity, when two of these special jugs in rich green and decorated with the royal insignia were presented to the English royal couple. In Great Britain, the gurgling fish jugs from the "Glug Glug Jug" brand − more commonly known as "Gluckigluck" − have since belonged to the absolute classics for the home and are a popular gift and collector's item for fans of the unusual design. What makes them so special: The gurgling sound when you fill the Gluckigluck with water or pour from it.

Why Gluckigluck gurgles so much

Anyone who wants to know where the funny sound of the carafe comes from will now get the answer: the shape of the carafe - which is a little reminiscent of a fishhook - means that air bubbles keep getting into the end of the carafe, where they make the noise. When the carafe is put down, most of the air that had initially collected at the end escapes again in the form of bubbles, creating an even louder noise because this part of the carafe is even larger. It is also the air that bubbles merrily back and forth when swirling that makes the funny noise.
