The sixth value is Research Lab, narrated by two iconic coffee makers in two unpublished trial pieces that are an exquisite expression of this research:
La conica manico lungo by Aldo Rossi and 9090 Manico forato by Richard Sapper.

Research lab: I consider Alessi to be an industrial research laboratory dedicated to a continuous mediation between the immensity of creative possibilities and the needs, or rather the dreams, of the public. Several hundred of the most stimulating designers of the various eras we have been through have worked with us. Their work is documented and preserved in our museum. La conica manico lungo and 9090 Manico forato: two particularly interesting examples of this aspect of Alessi are the coffee makers – "9090" by Richard Sapper and "La conica" by Aldo Rossi – of which we present two unpublished "laboratory proofs" from our archives. The first is a version with a perforated and coloured handle imagined by the German designer to limit the conduction
of heat during the preparation of coffee. The second has a long lateral handle, like the antique cuccume (coffee pots) that often recur in the designs of the Milanese designer. ◆ Alberto Alessi

WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE 9090
A version of the iconic 9090 coffee maker that pays tribute to the genius of its creator by presenting itself to the public with a handle he designed and which has never before been produced: a series of small holes run lengthwise through it and it is coloured a bright red instead the famous burnished steel. The only colour present in
Richard Sapper’s objects, red was used by the designer to emphasise the mobile and intersecting elements of his designs; just like the handle of this coffee maker which, in its movement, comprises an innovative closing system.

DEDICATED TO
Design enthusiasts who want to rediscover a great classic in an unrealised version.

DESIGNER
Born in Munich in 1932, he moved to Milan in the 1950s. Richard Sapper is considered one of the masters of Italian design. A multi-award winning designer, 11 times winner of the Compasso d'oro, he is the designer of some contemporary classics, unmistakable for their technical innovation and formal rigour. His objects, exhibited in the most important international design museums, show an extraordinary ability to respond to the evolution of people’s customs and taste, as well as to anticipate typologies and design solutions. His collaboration with Alessi has resulted in timeless icons such as the melodic kettle 9091 and the La Cintura di Orione series of cookware.
"I wanted to give this machine features that others don’t have, such as the ability to open it and wash it with one hand. I wanted to make better use of the heat, which is why it widens at the base. I didn't want to make a plastic handle because sooner or later they all end up burning and then you throw the coffee machine away. And I wanted to make a machine that didn't look like a coffeemaker... an espresso machine like that isn’t a coffeemaker: it’s a little steam engine!" ◆ Richard Sapper

Iconic
Awarded the Compasso d’Oro and present in the permanent collections of the most important design museums... and in your kitchen.
Unusual
The perforated handle to increase heat dispersion is a detail that is as functional as it is aesthetically expressive: an original version of an espresso coffee maker that has made the history of Alessi and more.
Innovative
Protected by no less than 5 utility patents, a functionally revolutionary coffee maker that has marked a real step forward in the history of this traditional household object.
High-performance
To prepare coffee with a few simple gestures. A peerless "steam engine" for an excellent espresso.
Constructively complex
The linear design of the few elements that make up the machine is actually the result of a complex production process that requires more than a hundred operations.

My factory is one hundred years old. A remarkable milestone certainly, but one that touches me only to a certain extent. What interests me more than its age is its freshness, its ability always to apply new ideas, to contribute new forms to the evolution of the domestic landscape. When grandfather Giovanni founded Alessi in 1921, after leaving the Cardini company in Omegna on the shores of Lake Orta, where he had been working as a spin former and turner, he probably did not have these immediate objectives in mind: his concern was to give his new company a sufficiently solid foundation. But my grandfather had his own precise idea of quality which foresaw a well-conceived and well-made product, and this idea has remained impressed on all of us, his descendants. So we might say that the recipe my factory will continue to apply for the next hundred years is exactly this: a well-conceived and well-made product that is well-designed by an excellent designer.
